Ruaa Center Continues for the Second Day the Training Course on Monitoring and Protecting Marine Turtles

19th January 2026

For the second consecutive day, the training course organized by the Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, Consulting, and Training continued, with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Small Grants Programme (SGP), and in cooperation with the Office of the General Authority for Environmental Protection. The course is implemented (within) the project Save the Marine Turtles in the Gulf of Aden, under the title: “Mechanisms for Monitoring and Protecting Marine Turtles During the Nesting Season on the Coasts of the Gulf of Aden.”

The second day of the course, delivered by academic expert Professor Dr. Salem Mahfouz Basais, focused on two main themes. The first addressed the issue of trafficking in marine turtles and the various uses associated with it, including food, medicinal, and industrial products. The second theme was dedicated to discussing systems and legislation related to the protection of marine turtles, covering international agreements, local laws, and the role of marine protected areas in conserving these endangered species.

The continuation of the course comes within the framework of efforts aimed at building the capacities of local cadres and those interested in environmental affairs, and enhancing awareness of the importance of preserving marine biodiversity along the coasts of the Gulf of Aden, thereby contributing to the protection of marine turtles and the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.
