Environmental Media Leads Collaboration Between the Faculty of Media and Ruaa Centre Under the Sea Turtle Protection Project
As part of the “Save the Sea Turtles in the Gulf of Aden” project—implemented by the Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, Consulting, and Training with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Small Grants Projects (SGP)—Dr. Jaklin Al-Batani, Head of Ruaa Centre, held a coordination meeting on Monday with Dr. Wahib Azyban, Dean of the Faculty of Media at the University of Aden. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two institutions in implementing awareness activities related to sea turtle conservation. This initiative forms part of the Center’s broader efforts to expand academic partnerships and promote environmental awareness among university students and the wider community.
During the meeting, both sides discussed mechanisms for engaging media students in producing diverse media content, including journalistic reports, television features, digital materials, and awareness messages highlighting the importance of protecting sea turtles and preserving coastal ecosystems. Dr. Jaklin Al-Batani emphasized that partnering with the Faculty of Media is a key step toward advancing environmental media, noting that student participation will offer practical learning opportunities and contribute to conservation efforts. For his part, Dr. Wahib Azyban reaffirmed the faculty’s readiness to support initiatives that enhance students’ practical engagement and broaden their exposure to environmental communication.
As part of this collaboration, the two sides agreed to organize an awareness lecture next week at the Faculty of Media, to be delivered by Dr. Abdullah Al-Hindi. The lecture will address the major threats facing sea turtles in the Gulf of Aden and the vital role of media in promoting environmental awareness, while presenting successful international models that can be adapted locally.
This meeting represents a continuation of Ruaa Center’s efforts to expand its outreach, strengthen the role of academic institutions in environmental advocacy, and cultivate a culture of social responsibility among University of Aden students and the community in Aden.
