Ruaa Centre for Studies Launches "Climate change and conflict

Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, in collaboration with Yemen’s Political Development Forum and Berghof Foundation, launched a five-day training program on May 25, 2025, titled “Empowering Civil Society to Lead Climate Adaptation.” The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Aden to address climate change impacts through risk assessment, conflict mitigation, and sector-specific strategies for water and agriculture.
The program, facilitated by trainers Abdulraqib Al-Akeesh and Yasir Sadiq, focuses on equipping participants with tools to design climate adaptation frameworks and resolve resource-driven conflicts. Dr. Jacqueline Albatani, Director of the Ruaa Centre, emphasized the urgency of empowering civil society amid Yemen’s overlapping humanitarian and climate crises, stating, “This training is a strategic investment in their ability to safeguard communities.”
Ms. Manal Muheem of the Political Development Forum highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration, noting that technical and financial support for such programs fosters partnerships critical for sustainable climate action.
Yemen faces severe environmental challenges, including water scarcity, with per capita availability projected to drop to 55 cubic meters by 2030—far below the global threshold of 500 cubic meters. Over 60% of the population experiences food insecurity, exacerbated by climate shocks and conflict. The training aligns with international efforts to integrate civil society into climate resilience planning.
The Ruaa Centre for Studies, a leading Aden-based research institution, continues to advocate for climate and governance reforms. The program is part of its broader project to strengthen local governance and peacebuilding in Yemen.
